Mixing Colors

10/18/2014

When I'm creating, I'm mixing colors with what I have in hands. I just work with the feeling of the moment. And I like it because it gives me Unique colors. Sometimes it's wrong to work like this because I'm creating a color, do not write the recipe, and can't create it again....

I have a project in mind, and only wants one colors for each, because I want them to be unique. I knew I wanted some Antique look colors.

So I started to mix some colors together from recipe you can find online and from what was on my work space, and 4hours after .... I was stil mixing colors, writing recipe, keeping an example of each...and it happens like that. Why ??
I don't know, but it was a really interesting process.

Mixing 1 copper/1 sea green gave me the same result as 4 Green Pearl/3 copper.

Mixing 1 turquoise/1 bronze gave me a really close result from 1 Denim/1 bronze

I also decided to mix some of Fluo Red and Fluo Pink to checked on the result once baked. And was really happy with it.

Here my experience in pictures:
I used recipe from Sculptey.com web site, Polymer clay central.com, 2 recipe from KatersAcres Web site and from what I had in my box of clay and wanted to try together.

Back to school back to clay

I was quiet since a long time.
But it's not I wasn't creating.....I made canes.
I had a Show to prepare for Mid-September.

And I wanted to create something new...so I made a Scene Cane.
I loved it. That was fun...
Picture
I created a Tutorial of it. It's now available for purchase on my Etsy shop.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/204778250/polymer-clay-tutorial-provence-lavender?
You can find it in English, it will be ready in French soon. And in Bilingual too.

Update: January 2015. With the new VAT Taxes regulation in Europe. I have to remove my tutorial from my Etsy shop, until a solution is found to clarify this regulation. I'm sorry for any disagreement.
You can find this tutorial on my Website http://isabelleclayart.weebly.com, you will receive it as a print version.

Fimo Professionnal Review

7/21/2014

Let me first say, it's my First time working with Fimo.
I'm a Premo clay user since years. And have only Premo experience to compare too!
I'm not an expert in clay review.

I wanted to try this Fimo because it's the brand new Fimo Professionnal now available in USA.
Picture
I ordered one package of each 3oz (yes, it comes in 3oz) colors, to see them for real. I really like the colors, they are really True and bright.
Picture
Opening the package is easy, the wrapping is thick and using it to close and preserve the clay is also really convenient.
Picture
I also really like the fact that each block is already separate in half, and eight sections. Makes it really easy to calculate and cut the amount of clay you want to use.
Picture
My first impression on the clay :
Out of the package, it's soft. As soft as Premo clay I'm used too. I was expecting a firmer clay.
Beginning to conditioned it with my hands, the clay was becoming a little bit sticky.
It becomes better and firmer when I started to conditioned it with the pasta machine. Premo is often creating air bubble under pasta machine, with Fimo Pro, no air bubble in my conditioning.
The clay at the end of conditioning was firmer than Premo after conditioning.
It was easy to create a skinner blend, and the clay was smooth, firm, and nice to work with. No sticky problem anymore.
Picture
The cane was easy to reduce just after assembling, firm enough to keep the shape. I didn't have much of waste at the end.

One part of my cane is made with Fimo and Premo mixed together...this was a mistake. This part was terribly sticky, too soft, and extremely difficult to keep in shape when reducing. Luckily for me, it was the island at the corner of my cane, so it didn't distord the rest of the cane design. I won't mixed them again.

I still need to bake a slice of this cane, to see how the colors are after baking.

In resume :
The Pros: (for my opinion)
- Soft out of package, so it's easy to conditioned
- Firm after pasta machine conditioning
- True and Bright colors
- The pre-cut sections, easy to cut the amount needed.
- Stay firm during reduction
- Barely any change of colors during baking (see update below)

The cons: (for my opinion)
- I didn't like how the clay stained my hands. I'm not a hot hands or cold hands, I'm usually in between. The yellow clay was all over my hands, I had to wash them before working with another colors.
- When two parts of clay are barely touching, they are bonding right away, it's really difficult to separate them if you realized you made a mistake. This process is easier with Premo, until you really press them together.
- Really sticky and difficult to work when mixed with Premo.
- Attract dust easily. This was my first cane that I found really dirty after work.
I had to clean it.

Thank you for reading.
Review made July 21 2014 by Isabelle Vacher - (ISabelleClayArt-Tchoupuce)

July 22nd 2014
Update on my Fimo Pro experience. Just finished a baking test. 20 mms @275F ... and barely any change in the colors !! I like this.
One more Pros reason to add on my review.
Can you tell which one is which one the picture ??
The size difference between both is because the reduction size was slightly different. Sorry for any confusion, the baked piece did not shrink.

Thank you.

What do you think I'm going to do with all those little pieces of clay ?
Trowing them in the garbage ??? ... No I can't do that, even the tiny piece of scrap I can't, I have to keep them all, like they are treasure ;-)

Ok, so sorting the colors and transform them.
and now make a tree, and add other blue canes already made to fill the sky.
Now, If you are curious about the Reduction process of a cane. 40mns of work compacted in a 6mns video. With some 50% volume reduction, and some speed up X2 and X8 ;-) Beware this video contain slamming and noise  ;-)))
And the result is....

In my group "52 canes project" on FB. We were challenged to make an owl. Instead of creating with fresh clay. I decided to create my owl with canes I already had done. And I'm quite happy with the result. I won't be able to reproduce him, he is a really Unique piece of work. You can buy the earrings I  created made of this really special cane!
I'm sharing with you my process for free, if you use this tutorial for your own owl, please do not forget to mention my name for the process tutorial. ;-)
